The Best PS5 Headsets from Sony, Razer & SteelSeries

If you aren’t using a headset with the new PlayStation 5, are you even gaming bro? In all seriousness, a gaming headset is arguably the most important accessory in a gamer’s arsenal (short of the controller, of course). Headsets not only allow you to hear every bit of the action but also where the action is coming from, which is crucial in first-person battle royales like COD, Battlefield or Fortnite. Unfortunately, even though the PS5 just launched last week, some of the best PS5 headsets are already sold out at popular retailers like GameStop, Best Buy, Amazon and Walmart.

In addition, because Sony still hasn’t offered Bluetooth support with the PS5, a lot of gamers are wondering if their favorite headsets from Razer or SteelSeries will even work with the PS5 and it’s new 3D audio features.

On top of that, we’re already seeing price gougers take advantage of the limited supply. To help you navigate this new market, we put together a shopping guide for PlayStation 5 headsets. This includes both official Sony products as well as gaming accessories from companies like SteelSeries.

How To Choose the Best Gaming Headsets for PS5 Consoles

The new PS5 utilizes Sony’s 3D audio, which is like 7.1 Surround Sound on hyperdrive. Essentially, more audio channels were added so you can also hear above and below you. This gives gamers who utilize this technology a serious edge on the competition because you’ll know where your enemies are lurking thanks to the precise sound dispersion.

Not only is it important to hear what is happening in the game, but it’s equally important to hear your teammates online so you can get and give directions. The best PS5 headsets have premium microphones, often with noise cancellation, so you can hear your team loud and clear, and if we’re being totally honest, talk a little trash, too.

What about Bluetooth headphones? If your headphones/headset has a 3.5mm audio jack or connects via USB, it should be compatible with PS5. Other Bluetooth headsets are a little trickier. For some absurd reason, the PlayStation 5 still does not offer Bluetooth connectivity for headphones. Fans were hoping Sony would offer Bluetooth support with the PS5, and it’s possible this will be available as an upgrade in the future, but for now, you’re out of luck. You can connect wirelessly with a USB dongle, however.

If you’re still worried about finding headphones compatible with the PS5, don’t fret, we have you covered.  Below you’ll find the best headsets for PS5 (and in many cases, these headphones also work with other consoles and PCs, too.)

A Quick Note on Price Gouging

As Nintendo Switch fans know all too well, price gouging is a real problem in the gaming market. Nintendo Switch price gougers routinely buy up supplies, then take advantage of rising demand by adding $100 to $150 to the price. We’re seeing something similar happen with the best PS5 headsets.

Case in point, the Sony Pulse 3D is currently sold out on GameStop, Walmart and other popular retailers. However, you can still find these popular headsets for sale from third-party sellers on Amazon and eBay. Amazon resellers are pricing the Sony Pulse 3D at $200, twice the retail price of $99. On eBay, you can find Pulse 3D headsets starting at $160, which is still a steep markup.

We would recommend waiting until retailers like GameStop and Walmart can restock rather than letting the price gougers win.

The Best PS5 Headsets from Sony & Other Brands

For now, the best Playstation headsets come from Sony itself. However, if you already have a gaming headset and want to know if it’s compatible with your new console, read on. Likewise, if you prefer headsets from brands like SteelSeries or Razer, we’ve got some great gaming headsets that will work perfectly with your new PlayStation console.

Keep reading to find our top recommendations for PlayStation 5 headsets.

1. Sony Pulse 3D

NOW IN STOCK!

BEST OVERALL

Sony created the Pulse 3D headset specifically for the PS5, so it’s no wonder this is a top choice for the console. Sony utilized PS5’s 3D audio which results in an incredibly realistic, and immersive audio experience while you’re gaming. And there isn’t a boom mic extending outward or any other tech bulging out or flashing. Instead, all of the tech is concealed within the sleek and clean design of the headphones. The demand for this headset has been through the roof, so you may have trouble finding them in stock.

As we explained above, these $99 headphones are being sold for $200 or more on sites like Amazon and eBay, which means price gougers are having a field day with the limited supply.

2. Turtle Beach Stealth 600 Gen 2 Wireless Gaming Headset

RUNNER UP

OK, so the Pulse 3D headphones still aren’t available from retailers and you’re now considering alternatives. If you want a pair of headphones that offers roughly the same features at roughly the same price, we recommended the Turtle Beach Stealth 600 Gen 2. Like the Pulse 3D, it’s wireless, gives you the same 3D audio experience and can even has colorways to match your PS5. Sure, the aesthetics of these things are not a slick as the Pulse 3D headphones, but Turtle Beach has made killer gaming headsets for years, so you won’t be losing anything on the quality side.

3. SteelSeries Arctis 9

3D AUDIO

If you want to take advantage of 3D audio from the PS5, the SteelSeries Arctis 9x is more than capable, no firmware updates required. It sports an impressive 20-hour battery life for those marathon gaming sessions in the middle of the night. Plus, superior audio quality and the Clearcast microphone ensure you’ll be able to hear someone trying to sneak up on you, and they’ll hear you loud and clear when you counter and talk some trash. It’s compatible with both PlayStation and Xbox next-gen consoles, so if you make a switch, you won’t have to buy another headset.

Simply put, if you’re looking for the best PS5 headsets that don’t come from Sony, you want the SteelSeries Arctis 9. Fully compatible with Sony’s 3D audio features, this award-winning gaming headset is perfect for PS5.

4. Razer BlackShark V2 X Gaming Headset

ALSO GREAT

It’s no surprise that Razer makes some of the best headsets for PS5. This wired headset is one of your best options for the PS5, or any console for that matter. Compatible with PS5 thanks to a wired 3.5mm headphone jack, the BlackShark V2 provides THX 7.1 spatial surround sound, creating a wide and in-depth soundscape that will enhance your gaming experience tenfold. The noise-cancelling microphone ensures your teammates can hear you loud and clear. These are lightweight, padded and comfortable, and downright sound awesome. You can’t go wrong with these cans.

5. Sony PlayStation Gold Wireless Headset 7.1

PS4 SET FOR PS5

Sony’s branded headphones also work with the latest PS5 console, but there is a caveat: the PS5 doesn’t support the headset companion app. This is a bummer if you have multiple pre-set audio levels across multiple games. That being said, the headset itself is lightweight and comfortable enough for marathon gaming sessions. They also sound great — the headset companion app just made the recipe a little sweeter. Rumor has it that compatibility with the companion app is in the works though, so it might not be too long till you’re able to get full functionality back.

6. SteelSeries Arctis 7

CONTENDER

While the SteelSeries Arctis 9 wins out in terms of audio and microphone quality, the SteelSeries Arctis 7 and 7P still has a lot to offer (the 7P denotes the 2020 model of these headphones). For $50 less, you actually get a longer battery life compared to the 9 series. This impressive gaming headset still offers great audio quality, a comfortable over ear design and is compatible with the PS5 3D audio features. You can connect to your new console via USB wireless. Best of all, no firmware updates are required to use this headset with the PS5.

7. Turtle Beach Stealth 700 Gen 2

AMAZON’S CHOICE

Sporting 20 hours of battery life — the same as the more expensive SteelSeries Arctis 9 — and a fantastic microphone, the Stealth 700 shouldn’t be ignored. When you flip the mic up into the housing, it automatically mutes it (and hides it), which is a handy feature and makes the headset look clean. Using the Turtle Beach Audio Hub app you can customize your chat and audio settings while you connect to the console via wireless USB. It’s about $50 more than the 600 series, but that extra money is well spent.

8. Razer Kraken X Gaming Headset

BUDGET PICK

The Razer Kraken X connects to the PS5 through a 3.5mm audio jack. The impressive part though, for only $50, you get 7.1 surround sound that creates an immersive gaming experience. You can make quick audio adjustments with the analog volume wheel and mute button, which is not as fancy or flashy as, lets say an app, but it does the trick. And the microphone is a small cardioid mic that bends into position. Again, nothing fancy, but for $50, the 7.1 surround sound is worth that alone.

9. HyperX Cloud Alpha Gaming Headset

BEST PC HEADSET FOR PS5

Geared towards PC gamers, the HyberX Cloud is equally impactful on the PS5. Perfect for long gaming sessions and boasting 7.1 Surround Sound, you’ll be able to hear every footstep and where it’s coming from. The noise cancellation for the microphone helps you lead your teammates to victory, especially when things start to heat up. This is a top performer for gamers across all consoles.

10. Astro Gaming A50 Wireless Headset + Base Station

BEST SPLURGE

If you have the cash, the Astro A50 is certainly worth the investment for serious gamers. It’s lightweight and comfortable, and in-between long gaming sessions, you can simply set it on the base station to charge. It connects to the PS5 via USB, but if you want to use the MixAmp along with your headphones, you’ll need to buy an additional HDMI adapter. Regardless, this is a high-end PS5 gaming headset that is well worth the investment.

11. EPOS Sennheiser GSP 300

GREAT BUDGET BUY

Through the 3.5mm audio jack, you are able to connect these budget, but solid sounding headphones to the new PS5 console. This no-frills PS5 headset is detailed and has great directional accuracy, so you’ll know where which side your attackers are coming from. The microphone doesn’t detach or slide back into the headset, but the voice capturing quality is all there. Although this headset is rather plain, it’s an excellent audio choice for the price point with comfortable ear cups.

12. Corsair VOID Elite Wireless Gaming Headset

HONORABLE MENTION

Those who have allocated a little bit of money to invest in a gaming headset will definitely feel like they’ve spent their money well with the Void Elite wireless gaming headset from Corsair. While these cans are mainly designed for PCs, they still work just fine with the PS5 thanks to the included wireless USB dongle. The 50mm audio drives provide top-level quality, while the breathable microfiber mesh fabric and memory foam earpads provide critical comfort to keep you going during those long sessions of Call of Duty: Warzone. Additionally, the headset’s angular design gives it a striking look and feel.

13. Audeze Penrose

ALSO CONSIDER

It’s rare to find a pair of headphones with planar magnetic drivers for less than $400, and even more rare to find them in a $299 gaming headset, but the Audeze Penrose is a PS5-compatible gaming headset that has managed the feat. At their best, planar magnetic drivers (which sandwich a electrically charged diaphragm between two sets of magnets) can provide superior bass and clarity compared to your standard cone-shaped dynamic driver. The Penrose does not disappoint in this regard, and although it may lack the fancy 3D head tracking of its big brother, the Mobius headset, you’re still getting some of the best audio quality possible from a wireless PS5 headset.
